Polish Biographical Studies is the only scientific journal (a year book), taking up research on the Polish historic biographies of nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in a broad sense of the term. The journal was founded in 2012 by the Centre for Biographical Research of the Faculty of Humanities University of Szczecin, led by Professor. Assoc. Adam Wątor accompanied by a team of researchers (historians, political scientists and sociologists).
Our goal is primarily a presentation of biographical research focusing on following aspects/questions:
- biographical research methodology
- analytical studies and dissertations devoted to the known and the unknown characters or the ones entirely forgotten.
- publication of source materials in the field of biography (letters, fragments of: memoirs, diaries, journals, relations, etc.)
- reviews and overviews of monographs of a biographical character.
Biographical research understood by us as a “life story”, a narrative describing the lives of individuals will not only cover biographies of individual persons, portraits, but also biographical profiles presented in a broader historical context. The biographical research enter into the sphere of interests of various sciences sociology, literary studies, political science as well as pedagogy and social psychology. However, it is the closest related to the history. For the humanities this kind of research can play a primary role. Not to be underestimated in the study of the history of nations, local communities, residents of the borders and various social groups. Hence, we would like to continue with the Polish tradition of biographical research and to publish on the pages of Polish Biographical Studies, both erudite, pretext, and collective biographies, describing stories of wider social groups and environments, still not avoiding new trends in this type of research. We hope that the journal will consolidate the community of historians coping with biographical research, and at the same time offers a platform to exchange views, space for the presentation of research results, both in Poland and abroad.
